LAHORE: High Court Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabbir on Thursday admitted on a regular hearing that a ban on sale of betel nuts was placed, as it was causing different types of cancers and different diseased.
An advocate Hamza Hamayun Rashid filed the petition submitting that betel nuts were consumed by adult and minors all over the country. He said that the World Health Organization (WHO) had already declared it dangerous for human consumption as it was causing esophagea, oral and pancreases related cancers.
He further added that after WHO report the Pakistan government was bound to evolve policy to ban sale of betel nuts. “It was high time to make law and formulate policy and also launch awareness campaign with regard of use of betel nuts causing different types of cancers and other diseases,” he stated.
He urged to impose ban on sale and consumption of betel nuts as these were dangerous for human consumption.
